The Baboon Sanctuary is a protected area that hosts the highlight of this trip, the endangered black howler monkey or ‘baboon’ as it is called in the local Creole dialect.
Since 1985, the Baboon Sanctuary has grown and helped with the protection of many species of flora and fauna in the region. It was founded by Dr. Robert Horwich, an American primatologist, and Fallet Young, a landowner in the Bermudan Landing. The baboons thrive to survive in the wild in a stretch of over 20 sq. miles along the historic New River. The Baboon Sanctuary encompasses dense jungle, pastures, farmlands, and the wonderful Belizean ‘village life’.
Tours to the Baboon Sanctuary are conducted by Lamanai River Tours. This all day tour starts with an hour drive to Bermudian Landing, located in the rural area of the Belize District. Guests can observe many of the 1500 baboons in the area while on a guided tour down the sanctuary’s trails. Canoes are also available to paddle down the green waters of the historic Old Belize River.
Altun Ha Mayan Site Tour
Altun-Ha means “stone water”. It was named after the rockstone pond near the site. This Mayan site is well known for the jade head carving of the Mayan sun god, Kinich Ahau, excavated in 1968. It is the largest of its kind ever found in the Mayan world. Guests are led into two pre- Classic Plazas that the Mayas once inhabited. Together these hold 13 Mayan Structures.
